Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (September 3) - The Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates back to the 17th century when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque VHM, and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart. Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as given to St. Margaret Mary (The Apostle of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart), began to grow in popularity soon after she died, but was officially recognized 75 years later. An important part of the First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart is the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As part of our Salesian tradition, each Oblate consecrates himself, and our community, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the First Friday of the Month. As part of our Salesian Family, we invite you to join as a Parish in consecrating yourself, your family, and our Parish to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and come for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church. Click HERE for the prayer of consecration.

Catechetical Sunday ( Sunday, September 19, 2021 ) - The Church in the United States observes Catechetical Sunday on September 19, 2021, with the theme of “Say the Word and My Soul Shall Be Healed.” On this day, our parish catechists receive a blessing from the community for their ministry among us. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith.
DeSales Weekly - Every Thursday, DeSales Weekly provides our subscribers with some fresh material to aid them in efforts to live Jesus, which is the motto of our patron, St. Francis de Sales. He sought to integrate the sacred and the secular to make the ordinary events of our lives extraordinary by bringing virtue, grace, and Jesus to all we do. Frequently, we may not be able to see the window through which the Spirit may enter a given moment or activity of our day. With reflections on a panoply of topics and experiences by the Oblates, as well as resources to help prepare for Sunday Mass, and other updates from the Oblate world, this weekly email offers a regular, concise resource to life the spirit and help it soar into the weekend. End of summer BBQ - On Sunday, August 29, OMC teens from grades 8th to 12, attending 10 different schools, gathered to celebrate the end of the summer with a pool party. During the evening, a reflection was shared on the first words of Jesus in John Ch1 to explain three of the reasons we have teen ministry: 1) Ask and discuss the important questions in life (John 1:38). 2) Encounter and experience God (John 1:39). 3) Follow Jesus as disciples (John 1:43). It was a great way to end the summer and kick off the school-year.
Thanks to the OMC parish community for your support of our teen ministry program. Please continue to pray for teen ministry as we connect with our teens and create a community centered on Jesus. |
Laudato sí Movement consolidated and renewed - The Global Catholic Climate Movement on July 29 changed its name to Laudato sí Movement (LSM). Climate and integral ecology are at the heart of the Movement, which takes its cue from Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on care for our common home. Speaking with Vatican News, the executive director of LSM, Tomás Insua, speaks about a “synodal journey” aimed at a deeper ecological conversion. As the Movement continues to renew itself, Pope Francis offers a word of thanks for its work. Click HERE for more information.
OMC Climate Ministry: It’s tempting to start the new year with lists and lists of what we want to accomplish. However, Pope Francis has only one goal for us this year: create a culture of care. Such a culture would overcome “indifference, waste and confrontation,” and help all of us deepen our ecological conversion. Below you’ll find ways to get started on that goal this month by coming together with Catholics around the globe and helping create a world full of “fraternity and solidarity, of mutual support and acceptance.”

Healthy Home, Healthy People Petition - Our common home and common family are suffering. The climate emergency is causing rising seas, a warmer planet, and more extreme weather. It’s devastating the lives of our poorest sisters and brothers. At the same time, biologists estimate that we’re driving species to extinction at a rate of 100 to 1,000 times their usual rate. “We have no such right” (Laudato Si’ 33). Two UN conferences. One opportunity for Catholics worldwide to listen to Pope Francis and act out our faith. The year 2021 We have an opportunity like no other. At the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in October, world leaders can set meaningful targets to protect creation. In November, at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), countries will announce their plans to meet the goals of the Paris agreement. Ahead of those meetings, it is our responsibility as Catholics to lift up the voices of the most vulnerable and advocate on their behalf. We must act now. Click HERE for more information and to sign the petition.

Take Back The Month: Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), is launching its, “Take Back the Month!” donation drive. This initiative aims to support women in need who experience obstacles to obtaining menstrual care and feminine hygiene products. Women with lack of proper access to feminine hygiene products due to financial hardship or homelessness suffer ill effects to their health and dignity each month. In addition, many women experiencing financial challenges stemming from the ongoing pandemic must choose to put other immediate needs and the needs of their family first such as purchasing food, diapers, and other basic essentials causing inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products for themselves. Those interested in helping can donate items online through YouGiveGoods at https://yougivegoods.com/takebackthemonth.
All goods donated will help stock the shelves of CSS’ “Ladies Locker” pantries. CSS’ housing and social services programs benefitting from the collection include: Mercy Hospice and Mc Auley House; Women of Hope; Visitation Homes; Mercy Café; Chester City Coffee Club; as well as six Family Service Center’s across the five-county Philadelphia area. Donated items will also be distributed to CSS staff working directly with teenage populations. Click HERE for information. Click HERE for article in Catholic Philly.com

Faith & Justice Opportunities:
Critical Race Theory (CRT) - We have all witnessed the controversy around Critical Race Theory (CRT). Parents are outraged, school boards are under attack, State legislatures have passed laws "banning it" from school curriculum, and the media (conservative & liberal) have hyped it. It is important to carefully navigate CRT and the many issues around race, racism, history, culture, equity, and education that have been conflated into it by those who have repackaged it for their own, perhaps less than charitable, purposes. This video from Educationweek.com is concise in addressing CRT from an educators viewpoint. The video may be useful in beginning the process of educating ourselves about CRT, helping us to move beyond the hype in order to develop a better understanding of it, and allow us to have productive discussions.
21-Day Racial Equity Challenge: For 21 days, we challenge you to enter into the complex work of understanding the realities of racial injustice and anti-Blackness in the U.S. The Ignatian Racial Equity Challenge is designed for all participants, regardless of race, ethnicity, prior anti-racism work, age or background and will include opportunities to learn, pray, and act on different themes of racial equity.
