All of us know instinctively that nothing compares to “being there” in person. Whether it’s being at a friend’s wedding, sitting down to have a heart-to-heart conversation, comforting a family member while she is grieving or watching as your baby takes his first steps, we all know that being physically present makes all the difference. The same logic applies to our life as Catholics. Especially when it comes to the Mass, truly, nothing compares to being there.

November is Black Catholic History Month - The National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States voted in July 1990 to designate November as Black Catholic History Month. November marks a time when the Church prays for all saints and souls in loving remembrance, as well as a time to recall the saints and souls of Africa and the African Diaspora. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, there are over 3 million African American Catholics in the U.S. Today, there are 250 African American priests, 437 deacons, and 75 men of African descent in seminary formation for the priesthood in the United States. There are 5 living African American bishops, of who two head U.S. dioceses. One of them, the Archbishop of Washington, was elevated to the College of Cardinals in November 2020. There are also 400 African American religious sisters and 50 religious brothers in the United States

Life as an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales - We Oblates of St. Francis de Sales share in the same hunger for God as our founder, Fr. Louis Brisson. Following his example, we have vowed ourselves to the religious life in order to dedicate ourselves to God and serve Him in the world. Oblates commit to both a personal and communal prayer life. We share in a community life that respects, celebrates and calls forth each man’s gifts. From our parishes, Catholic colleges, high schools, and grade schools, to our foreign missions, Oblates instill the Gospel and the Salesian spirit throughout the Church. Click HERE for video on Oblate Life A Humble & Practical Calling to Love God & Neighbor. |
SSJ Directional Statement 2019 - We, Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia, commit to be courageous witnesses joyful to the Gospel imperative of active, inclusive love. Informed by communal discernment and liberated by God’s Spirit, we move boldly into the future. Becoming an SSJ - We are a vibrant and forward-thinking community of well-educated, dynamic and courageous women committed to religious life, service to others and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are called to foster unity, reconciliation and inclusiveness. We bear witness daily to the interconnectedness of all people and all creation. |
DeSales Weekly - Every Thursday, DeSales Weekly provides our subscribers with some fresh material to aid them in efforts to live Jesus, which is the motto of our patron, St. Francis de Sales. He sought to integrate the sacred and the secular to make the ordinary events of our lives extraordinary by bringing virtue, grace, and Jesus to all we do. Frequently, we may not be able to see the window through which the Spirit may enter a given moment or activity of our day. With reflections on a panoply of topics and experiences by the Oblates, as well as resources to help prepare for Sunday Mass, and other updates from the Oblate world, this weekly email offers a regular, concise resource to life the spirit and help it soar into the weekend. It’s tempting to start the new year with lists and lists of what we want to accomplish. However, Pope Francis has only one goal for us this year: create a culture of care. Such a culture would overcome “indifference, waste and confrontation,” and help all of us deepen our ecological conversion. Below you’ll find ways to get started on that goal this month by coming together with Catholics around the globe and helping create a world full of “fraternity and solidarity, of mutual support and acceptance.”
|
OMC Joins EcoPhilly - The Philadelphia Archdiocese is responding to Pope Francis’ call in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’ for “a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet” in light of the fact that “everyone’s talents and involvement are needed to redress the damage caused by human abuse of God’s creation” As part of the Laudato Si' Movement, the mission of EcoPhilly is to establish a network of creation care teams throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that achieve measurable improvements in their local environment. The Catholic Climate Action Petition for individuals: Send a message to U.S. leaders - A Catholic appeal to work together to boldly protect our common home and our future. We invite you to join your voice with thousands of individuals signing this climate action petition across the U.S. Catholic community as a faith-filled appeal to President Biden and the U.S. Congress, to work beyond partisanship and create climate solutions to care for present and future generations and our common home. This Catholic petition is in solidarity with Catholic institutions that are signing a Catholic climate action letter. We will deliver these united messages during Season of Creation, seeking and praying that they will move the needle of the nation’s moral compass toward the bold and ambitious solutions the nation and world need to address the climate crisis. Climate Action Alert - The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow will take place November 1-12, 2021. COP26 is an opportunity like no other to lift up the voices of the most vulnerable and advocate on their behalf. If we don’t, who will? It’s truly up to us. God’s creation is suffering. And we’re running out of time. Pope Francis will be in attendance, this is first time, a Pope is attending a UN Climate Change Conference. support Pope Francis now: Sign the Healthy Planet, Healthy People petition. More than 100,000 Catholics and 300 organizations have joined this initiative. We are asking four simple things:
- Tackle the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis together
- Limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and promise no more biodiversity loss
- Ensure equitable global action, including support for those most affected
- Protect and respect human rights, including the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in climate and biodiversity action
Laudato sí Movement consolidated and renewed - The Global Catholic Climate Movement on July 29 changed its name to Laudato sí Movement (LSM). Climate and integral ecology are at the heart of the Movement, which takes its cue from Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on care for our common home. Speaking with Vatican News, the executive director of LSM, Tomás Insua, speaks about a “synodal journey” aimed at a deeper ecological conversion. As the Movement continues to renew itself, Pope Francis offers a word of thanks for its work. Click HERE for more information.
Monthly Laudato Si Prayer Services: Join in these Global Prayer Services every first Friday of the month to hear creation’s song, creation’s cry, and creation’s invitation. Throughout these prayer services we will have a guest's reflection, scripture reading and prayers of the faithful. We look forward to praying with you. Critical Race Theory (CRT) - We have all witnessed the controversy around Critical Race Theory (CRT). Parents are outraged, school boards are under attack, State legislatures have passed laws "banning it" from school curriculum, and the media (conservative & liberal) have hyped it. It is important to carefully navigate CRT and the many issues around race, racism, history, culture, equity, and education that have been conflated into it by those who have repackaged it for their own, perhaps less than charitable, purposes. This video from Educationweek.com is concise in addressing CRT from an educators viewpoint. The video may be useful in beginning the process of educating ourselves about CRT, helping us to move beyond the hype in order to develop a better understanding of it, and allow us to have productive discussions.
