OMC Update October 29, 2021

First Friday Eucharistic Adoration & Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
November 5, 2021 - OMC Church
Adoration: 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM
Evening Prayer & Benediction: 5:30 PM
Join us for First Friday Adoration - First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus are related to devotional practices that date back to the 17th century when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque VHM, and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart. Several promises were made to those who practice the First Fridays Devotions, one of which includes final perseverance. Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as given to St. Margaret Mary (The Apostle of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart), began to grow in popularity soon after she died, but was officially recognized 75 years later. An important part of the First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart is the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As part of our Salesian tradition, each Oblate consecrates himself, and our community, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the First Friday of the Month. As part of our Salesian Family, we invite you to join as a Parish in consecrating yourself, your family, and our Parish to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and come for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church. Click HERE for the prayer of consecration.

All of us know instinctively that nothing compares to “being there” in person. Whether it’s being at a friend’s wedding, sitting down to have a heart-to-heart conversation, comforting a family member while she is grieving or watching as your baby takes his first steps, we all know that being physically present makes all the difference. The same logic applies to our life as Catholics. Especially when it comes to the Mass, truly, nothing compares to being there.

COP26 is the 2021 United Nations climate change conference - For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority. This year will be the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26. With the UK as President, COP26 takes place in Glasgow. In the run up to COP26 the UK is working with every nation to reach agreement on how to tackle climate change. World leaders will arrive in Scotland, alongside tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses, and citizens for twelve days of talks. Not only is it a huge task but it is also not just yet another international summit. Most experts believe COP26 has a unique urgency.

DeSales Weekly - Every Thursday, DeSales Weekly provides our subscribers with some fresh material to aid them in efforts to live Jesus, which is the motto of our patron, St. Francis de Sales. He sought to integrate the sacred and the secular to make the ordinary events of our lives extraordinary by bringing virtue, grace, and Jesus to all we do. Frequently, we may not be able to see the window through which the Spirit may enter a given moment or activity of our day. With reflections on a panoply of topics and experiences by the Oblates, as well as resources to help prepare for Sunday Mass, and other updates from the Oblate world, this weekly email offers a regular, concise resource to life the spirit and help it soar into the weekend. Update - Parish Building Projects
As a parish community, we build upon the legacy we have inherited. Our spiritual life, and our parish were built by our ancestors in the faith beginning in 1855. Since then, we have continued to strengthen the gift that we have received.
The Building Committee will meet to begin planning the completion of the rectory windows either in the spring or next summer, depending on the funds. We will also discuss other future projects. If you are interested in joining the Parish Building Committee, please contact Fr Bob. |
These projects are funded through the Parish Building Fund, which was established in 2007 for the sole purpose of funding capital improvements to the buildings and property. Since its inception, the Building Fund has invested over $3.2 million dollars in the restoration of our parish buildings and grounds. Funding sources for the Parish Building Fund are the Annual Building Fund Appeal, capital gifts, bequests, a percentage of our yearly excess in operating revenues, and individual donations. We offer our thanks to everyone who has contributed to the restoration and upkeep of our parish building.

It’s tempting to start the new year with lists and lists of what we want to accomplish. However, Pope Francis has only one goal for us this year: create a culture of care. Such a culture would overcome “indifference, waste and confrontation,” and help all of us deepen our ecological conversion. Below you’ll find ways to get started on that goal this month by coming together with Catholics around the globe and helping create a world full of “fraternity and solidarity, of mutual support and acceptance.”

Climate Action Alert - The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow will take place November 1-12, 2021. COP26 is an opportunity like no other to lift up the voices of the most vulnerable and advocate on their behalf. If we don’t, who will? It’s truly up to us. God’s creation is suffering. And we’re running out of time. Pope Francis will be in attendance, this is first time, a Pope is attending a UN Climate Change Conference. support Pope Francis now: Sign the Healthy Planet, Healthy People petition. More than 100,000 Catholics and 300 organizations have joined this initiative. We are asking four simple things:
As Catholics, it is our responsibility We must act now. Share the petition. Join the global Catholic family and take action now.
- Tackle the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis together
- Limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and promise no more biodiversity loss
- Ensure equitable global action, including support for those most affected
- Protect and respect human rights, including the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in climate and biodiversity action
As Catholics, it is our responsibility We must act now. Share the petition. Join the global Catholic family and take action now.
The Catholic Climate Action Petition for individuals: Send a message to U.S. leaders - A Catholic appeal to work together to boldly protect our common home and our future. We invite you to join your voice with thousands of individuals signing this climate action petition across the U.S. Catholic community as a faith-filled appeal to President Biden and the U.S. Congress, to work beyond partisanship and create climate solutions to care for present and future generations and our common home. This Catholic petition is in solidarity with Catholic institutions that are signing a Catholic climate action letter. We will deliver these united messages during Season of Creation, seeking and praying that they will move the needle of the nation’s moral compass toward the bold and ambitious solutions the nation and world need to address the climate crisis. Click HERE to sign the petition and for more information
Laudato sí Movement consolidated and renewed - The Global Catholic Climate Movement on July 29 changed its name to Laudato sí Movement (LSM). Speaking with Vatican News, the executive director of LSM, Tomás Insua, speaks about a “synodal journey” aimed at a deeper ecological conversion. As the Movement continues to renew itself, Pope Francis offers a word of thanks for its work. Click HERE for more information.

An Invitation for Making Room - Most in our parish are fortunate enough to have a place to live. Perhaps in our homes and apartments we have a spare room which is used little. Have you thought of possibly offering a homeless person short-term hospitality in your spare room? I have, and I have been in contact with a shelter who will place someone likely to benefit -- someone who perhaps may just need a shower and a good night’s sleep for a job interview. I am interested in connecting with others who are willing to explore this as a potential ministry, and perhaps form a hands-on group. If you are interested in meeting outdoors to discuss this, please email me at: [email protected] . Please mention WELCOME STRANGER in the “Subject” line. Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition by Christine D. Pohl, Ph.D., is a good place to start in considering this topic. Click image for Podcast.

Volunteer Immigration Attorneys Needed - Non-profit groups, assisting with the reception of Afghan refugees, have asked for the volunteer services of experienced immigration attorneys. The emphasis, at the moment, is on attorneys who are genuinely experienced in immigration law. The refugees are currently being housed at Joint Base Dix/McGuire/Lakehurst in Burlington County NJ. Volunteers would need to be able to serve at the base and provide their own transportation. Anyone qualified and interested should contact OMC parishioner, John J. Grogan at [email protected].
Welcoming our Sisters and Brothers from Afghanistan - The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) are coordinating with the federal government’s Operation Allies Refuge to provide a point-of-entry location for people evacuated from Afghanistan. The Kenney administration is working with partners to welcome evacuees and returning American citizens who will be arriving in our city over the coming weeks. The Philadelphia International Airport is the second airport in the nation to welcome arrivals as part of this federally-led relief operation and emergency response, Operation Allies Refuge PHL. The City of Philadelphia is collaborating with the federal government and is focused on protecting the rights and dignity of Afghan families arriving in the country. In Philadelphia, we know our diversity is our strength. We are a proud welcoming city that celebrates its vibrant immigrant community. Click HERE for how you can help.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) - We have all witnessed the controversy around Critical Race Theory (CRT). Parents are outraged, school boards are under attack, State legislatures have passed laws "banning it" from school curriculum, and the media (conservative & liberal) have hyped it. It is important to carefully navigate CRT and the many issues around race, racism, history, culture, equity, and education that have been conflated into it by those who have repackaged it for their own, perhaps less than charitable, purposes. This video from Educationweek.com is concise in addressing CRT from an educators viewpoint. The video may be useful in beginning the process of educating ourselves about CRT, helping us to move beyond the hype in order to develop a better understanding of it, and allow us to have productive discussions.
