Celebrating the Sacraments:
STATEMENT OF ARCHBISHOP NELSON J. PÉREZ REGARDING SAFETY AS MASS OBLIGATION RESUMES - “Ensuring the health and welfare of those entrusted to the pastoral and temporal care of our Church, especially as we navigate a global pandemic, is a paramount priority as the Archbishop of Philadelphia. During this time of acute hardship and struggle, I have worked in conjunction with the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania and the senior administration of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to implement best practices intended to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and protect those most vulnerable. Offertory & In-pew Collection: We have resumed the Offertory Procession and the in-pew collection. If you or your family would like to bring up the gifts, please see the usher when you come to Mass.

We invite you to become an “Adorer” for our Parish Eucharistic Adoration on the First Friday of each month (October thru June). You can sign up for a one-hour period or a half-hour period. Adoration, Vespers, and Benediction are in the Church.

Catechetical Sunday ( Sunday, September 19, 2021 ) - The Church in the United States observes Catechetical Sunday on September 19, 2021, with the theme of “Say the Word and My Soul Shall Be Healed.” On this day, our parish catechists receive a blessing from the community for their ministry among us. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. OMC Mask Recommendations - In support of the the City of Philadelphia's new mask mandate, or proof of vaccination for business, we are voluntarily asking everyone (vaccinated and unvaccinated) wear a mask in Church. We want all parishioners and liturgical ministers to feel comfortable with attending and ministering at Mass. Let us continue to do our part in defeating COVID 19. For the sake of the common good, we encourage everyone to get vaccinated.

Update - Parish Building Projects
As a parish community, we build upon the legacy we have inherited. Our spiritual life, and our parish were built by our ancestors in the faith beginning in 1855. Since then, we have continued to strengthen the gift that we have received. In response to our obligation to maintain our heritage, the Parish Building Committee provides the following update:
Guild Foundation Wall ($18,000) - As previously mentioned, major repairs to the front foundation wall of the parish office building (Guild House) are needed. Hopefully the work will begin on he 2nd week of September. There will be an interruption to business as usual in that the office will be inaccessible by the front door, we'll need to use the side door. Church Boiler Replacement ($25,000)- The Building Committee has been trying to investigate the conversion of the Church boiler from oil to gas. One of two boilers has been inoperable since February and we operated on one boiler throughout last winter... we were lucky! After several application submissions and numerous calls to PGW to price out having gas service installed in the Church, we still have not heard from PGW. The boiled needs to be replaced before winter, so we may install another oil-fueled boiler. |
Bell Tower ($10,000) - The interior window sills need to be reset and the windows need repair.... both are scheduled .
The Building Committee will meet in September to begin planning the completion of the rectory windows either in the spring or next summer, depending on the funds. We will also discuss other future projects. If you are interested in joining the Parish Building Committee, please contact Fr Bob. These projects are funded through the Parish Building Fund, which was established in 2007 for the sole purpose of funding capital improvements to the buildings and property. Since its inception, the Building Fund has invested over $3.2 million dollars in the restoration of our parish buildings and grounds. Funding sources for the Parish Building Fund are the Annual Building Fund Appeal, capital gifts, bequests, a percentage of our yearly excess in operating revenues, and individual donations. We offer our thanks to everyone who has contributed to the restoration and upkeep of our parish building. |

Teen Ministry Special Recycling Collection: During this Season of Creation as we continue to learn, pray, and act to care for our world, the Teens of our Parish are organizing a collection for hard to recycle items. The Parish will be collecting the following items for recycling: Wine Corks - Soda Tabs – Crayons - Pens and Highlighters - Contact cases. Please save the items and drop them off at the designated boxes on the Rectory porch during the weekends of September 4-5 through October 2-3.

OMC Golden Knights 2021 CYO Cross Country Season - Any young parishioner or OMC School student, born from 2006 – 2016 is eligible to participate. Parents sign up your child by using the link below. Practices will be on Tuesday & Friday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30PM on Forbidden Trail at Valley Green Inn – Starting Tuesday (9/14). For those with conflicting schedules we will hold make up practices for grades 6-8 on Wednesday evenings. Regular Meets are held at Belmont Plateau every Sunday from September 19 through October 24th and our Championship Meet is on October 29th . Cost is $65/child with a $10 discount for additional children.

Laudato sí Movement consolidated and renewed - The Global Catholic Climate Movement on July 29 changed its name to Laudato sí Movement (LSM). Climate and integral ecology are at the heart of the Movement, which takes its cue from Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on care for our common home. Speaking with Vatican News, the executive director of LSM, Tomás Insua, speaks about a “synodal journey” aimed at a deeper ecological conversion. Healthy Home, Healthy People Petition - Our common home and common family are suffering. The climate emergency is causing rising seas, a warmer planet, and more extreme weather. It’s devastating the lives of our poorest sisters and brothers. At the same time, biologists estimate that we’re driving species to extinction at a rate of 100 to 1,000 times their usual rate. “We have no such right” (Laudato Si’ 33). Two UN conferences. One opportunity for Catholics worldwide to listen to Pope Francis and act out our faith. The year 2021 We have an opportunity like no other. At the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in October, world leaders can set meaningful targets to protect creation. In November, at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), countries will announce their plans to meet the goals of the Paris agreement. Ahead of those meetings, it is our responsibility as Catholics to lift up the voices of the most vulnerable and advocate on their behalf. We must act now. Miraculous medal Shrine Season of Creation Online Speaker Series: What Must Be Done? Vincentian Family Perspectives on Love and Justice for Creation (Sundays, September 12, 19, 26, 7:30-8:30 p.m. via Zoom) - On consecutive weeks, three Vincentian family speakers will present what being Catholic has to do with the environment. The talks will focus on the Vincentian call to action and Catholic understandings of love and justice. 2021 Catholic Charities Appeal: The 2021 Catholic Charities Appeal - Giving Hope to All is underway. For over 60 years the Appeal has served as a positive source for good in all facets of the Church in Philadelphia. The Catholic Charities Appeal brings hope where hope is needed most. Weekly Faith Walk - Councilwoman Bass invites you to join her every Wednesday at 12 Noon for a weekly Interdenominational Faith Walk through different communities to address issues of Gun Violence, Crime and Drugs, and to share various resources and pray for our young people and community members. OMC Toiletries Collection (Sept 18-26) - The OMC The Peace & Justice Committee is collecting toiletries, both travel and regular sizes of personal care products for area shelters. Bring donations to the Church before Masses or drop them off in the bin on the Oblate Residence porch. Please, no used or open toiletries.
St John's Hospice: Boot Up Philly - St. John’s Hospice is gearing up for the cold by preparing for our inaugural Boot Up Philly! An initiative modeled after the blessed St. John Neumann, who didn’t have any money to give the poor but instead gave the shoes off his feet. We invite you to partner with us as we work to raise $35,000 to purchase 1,000 new boots, socks, and undergarments for individuals experiencing homelessness this upcoming holiday season and to unlock a very generous match from our SJH Advisory Board. Any balance from Boot Up Philly will be put towards our Annual Appeal to serve the other incredible missions of Saint John’s Hospice. Home Run 5K - You can make a difference for those experiencing homelessness in just 3.1 miles. Join Bethesda Project for the 2nd annual Home Run 5K from October 7-10, 2021! Register individually or as a team to walk, run, or bike a course of your choice. This can be a great way to connect outdoors and walk as a congregation, Sunday School classes, or worship teams. All racers track their times while completing the 5K and record their times on the race page for the chance to win prizes including fastest time, best race photo, most funds raised, and more. Registration is $25 (with a $200 fundraising minimum). All funds raised support Bethesda Project’s essential programs and 16 shelters and residences in Philadelphia. Volunteer Immigration Attorneys Needed - Non-profit groups, assisting with the reception of Afghan refugees, have asked for the volunteer services of experienced immigration attorneys. The emphasis, at the moment, is on attorneys who are genuinely experienced in immigration law. The refugees are currently being housed at Joint Base Dix/McGuire/Lakehurst in Burlington County NJ. Volunteers would need to be able to serve at the base and provide their own transportation. Anyone qualified and interested should contact OMC parishioner, John J. Grogan at [email protected].
Welcoming our Sisters and Brothers from Afghanistan - The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) are coordinating with the federal government’s Operation Allies Refuge to provide a point-of-entry location for people evacuated from Afghanistan. The Kenney administration is working with partners to welcome evacuees and returning American citizens who will be arriving in our city over the coming weeks. The Philadelphia International Airport is the second airport in the nation to welcome arrivals as part of this federally-led relief operation and emergency response, Operation Allies Refuge PHL. The City of Philadelphia is collaborating with the federal government and is focused on protecting the rights and dignity of Afghan families arriving in the country. Take Back The Month: Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), is launching its, “Take Back the Month!” donation drive. This initiative aims to support women in need who experience obstacles to obtaining menstrual care and feminine hygiene products. Women with lack of proper access to feminine hygiene products due to financial hardship or homelessness suffer ill effects to their health and dignity each month. In addition, many women experiencing financial challenges stemming from the ongoing pandemic must choose to put other immediate needs and the needs of their family first such as purchasing food, diapers, and other basic essentials causing inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products for themselves. Caring for Friends – CFF (formerly Aid for Friends): Meals are still needed. You can drop off your frozen meals at the parish or a volunteer can pick them up from your home; please contact me to make arrangements. National Migration Week Video Series: 7 Stories of Faith, Hope and Love (September 20-26) - The Miraculous Medal Shrine is responding to the call for immigrant dignity and recognition by presenting seven videos beginning September 20 through September 26. Each video highlights first-hand inspiring and informative personal stories of those who have immigrated or the lessons learned from serving and working with immigrant populations. The Shrine will also host the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's World Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugees Mass on Monday, September 20. Hope Blooms: A VIRTUAL Retreat for Catholic Women Healing from Betrayal Trauma (October 22-23, 2021) - This virtual retreat is for women seeking healing from betrayal trauma, that is, discovering a spouse’s or significant other’s pornography use, infidelity, and/or sex addiction. Gather with us as we lay our pain, our sorrow and our betrayals at the Lord’s feet. With expectant faith, let us open our hands and our hearts to receive His merciful outpouring. Join us for this powerful virtual retreat experience: talks, meditations, sacred movements, small group healing prayer, Mass and Adoration. Critical Race Theory (CRT) - We have all witnessed the controversy around Critical Race Theory (CRT). Parents are outraged, school boards are under attack, State legislatures have passed laws "banning it" from school curriculum, and the media (conservative & liberal) have hyped it. It is important to carefully navigate CRT and the many issues around race, racism, history, culture, equity, and education that have been conflated into it by those who have repackaged it for their own, perhaps less than charitable, purposes. The video may be useful in beginning the process of educating ourselves about CRT, helping us to move beyond the hype in order to develop a better understanding of it, and allow us to have productive discussions.

We have heard harrowing first-hand accounts from those witnessing the humanitarian crisis unfold on the ground. We have also shared deep sadness following the tragic deaths of Armed Forces personnel and civilians in Kabul.
We are all created in the image of God and entitled respect and dignity. As people of faith, we have a responsibility to help our Afghani brothers and sisters through prayer as well as generous and compassionate acts of mercy. I urge all people of goodwill to support Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA humanitarian efforts. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia stands ready to work with these organizations as well as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to assist refugees arriving in the United States. All of us must do what we can to answer the call of the Holy Father to accompany migrants and refugees on their journey.
