If a new COVID variant were to come to Philadelphia, or cases started to rise again, the Department of Health may need to move to the Mask Precautions Level or higher and start requiring public mandates again. Certain higher-risk settings like schools (including public, private, Archdiocesan, charter, and early childhood education), healthcare settings, and public transit still require people to wear masks.

Pray The Rosary for Ukraine - Pope Francis made a heartfelt appeal for peace in Ukraine, saying that the threat of war had caused “great pain in my heart.” “Despite the diplomatic efforts of the last few weeks,” the Pope said, “increasingly alarming scenarios are opening up,” with many people all over the world feeling anguish and pain. ““Once again the peace of all is threatened by partisan interests,” he stressed. Pope Francis appealed to those “with political responsibility to examine their consciences seriously before God, who is the God of peace and not of war, who is the Father of all, not just of some, who wants us to be brothers and not enemies.”” He also prayed that “all the parties involved refrain from any action that would cause even more suffering to the people, destabilizing coexistence between nations and bringing international law into disrepute.” read more.

The “Synod on Synodality - Communion, Participation, and Mission” is a two-year process of listening and dialogue beginning in 2021 and concluding in 2023. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of Synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through her experience which processes can help her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open herself to mission. The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales celebrate a double Salesian Jubilee Year (January 23, 2022 to January 24, 2023) marking the 400th anniversary of the death of St. Francis de Sales (1622) and the 450th anniversary of the birth of our secondary founder, St. Jane de Chantal (1572). Their friendship gave us what we fondly call "Salesian Spirituality." This jubilee allows for a renewal of The Salesian life. Oblate Superior General, Fr. Barry Strong, OSFS, highlights three pillars of this jubilee year: to increase knowledge and love of the two saints; to encourage imploring their intercession; and to imitate their virtues and devotion. Healthy Planet, Heathy People - The Laudato Si' Movement is relaunching the Healthy Planet, Healthy People petition ahead of the critical United Nations biodiversity conference (April 25 to May 8, 2022). Last year, more than 120,000 people and 420 organizations, representing hundreds of thousands of people, signed the petition ahead of the UN’s Climate Change Conference. Now we’re relaunching the petition to call on world governments to protect God’s creation and lift up the voices of the most vulnerable at the upcoming UN biodiversity conference. “Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right” (LS 33). Here’s one thing you can do today: Sign and share the petition. The upcoming UN conference is huge. It’s how countries around the world will agree to protect nature and our common home. Ahead of this conference, we’re trying to secure at least 100,000 more signatures to really let governments know where Catholics stand on this massive problem.

The Cenacle family life center in Frankford, run in partnership with Catholic Social Services, has been growing so fast and is now serving over 150 mom's and their children! As The Cenacle grows and we develop more programs to serve the community, we are in need of volunteers to help make these programs a success. bOne of the programs we are developing is family dinners on Thursday Nights. We are still working out some details but we are looking for families/parishes/respect life groups and anyone else who would be willing to help by cooking meals/providing food for the dinners. While we are still working out some of the details, the dinners will be held after work hours beginning at the end of January, estimated between 5-7pm at The Cenacle (1527 Church Street, Philadelphia, PA 19124). The Dinners will be an amazing opportunity to serve the community here in Frankford. If you are interested, or know someone who may be, email [email protected] for more information!
Welcoming Afghan Families - As you may be aware, Philadelphia is going to be the home of 700 of the Afghan people who have fled their country recently in fear for their lives. There are 4 local Refugee Resettlement agencies that will accomplish the momentous task of bringing these families into the Philadelphia community and all that entails including housing and furnishing, transportation, schools, and the learning of American daily life.
Many of these families are currently at Joint Base Maguire/ Fort Dix in New Jersey or in a hotel in Center City. Their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter are currently being met. The next step is to find affordable housing. Once that is done, each family will have a multitude of additional needs including material needs, but also assistance with navigating a wholly new, unfamiliar world that is to become their permanent home.
Our parish mission statement calls for us to embrace each person and to humbly serve the needs of God’s people. There are a few ways that you could help welcome these new members of our Philadelphia community:

We have recently moved Afghan families into housing who have requested specific items to make themselves feel more at home. Critical Race Theory (CRT) - We have all witnessed the controversy around Critical Race Theory (CRT). Parents are outraged, school boards are under attack, State legislatures have passed laws "banning it" from school curriculum, and the media (conservative & liberal) have hyped it. It is important to carefully navigate CRT and the many issues around race, racism, history, culture, equity, and education that have been conflated into it by those who have repackaged it for their own, perhaps less than charitable, purposes. The video may be useful in beginning the process of educating ourselves about CRT, helping us to move beyond the hype in order to develop a better understanding of it, and allow us to have productive discussions.

One-Can Meal - Nutritional Development Services, an agency of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, is holding its annual “One-Can Meal” food drive to enable broad and meaningful participation in the Lenten season. For over 35 years, NDS has hosted this Lenten food drive as a way to help fulfill the season’s call to almsgiving. This initiative benefits hundreds of people in need throughout the five-county Philadelphia area.
